Juneteenth is more than a historical date. It is a celebration of freedom, resilience, perseverance and the ongoing pursuit of a more perfect union.
Observed each year on June 19, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. The day became a powerful symbol of liberation, hope and the enduring belief that freedom belongs to everyone.
While Juneteenth has been celebrated within African American communities for generations, its recognition across the nation is due in large part to the tireless efforts of Opal Lee, often known as the Mother of Juneteenth.
Beginning in her late eighties, Ms. Lee walked hundreds of miles, organized events, educated communities and advocated for Juneteenth to receive national recognition. Her determination inspired people across the country and helped bring greater awareness to the significance of the holiday. In 2021, her decades of advocacy helped culminate in Juneteenth being recognized as a federal holiday.
Her story serves as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with ordinary people who refuse to give up on extraordinary goals.
